How long does vinyl siding last in Ontario?

Two different lifespans are being measured, and confusing them is why the numbers you find vary so widely.

Structural life is how long the panel keeps doing its job — staying locked, shedding water and resisting impact. In this climate that is commonly thirty years or more for decent product installed correctly.

Finish life is how long it still looks like the colour you chose. That is shorter, often by a decade or more, and it is the reason most homeowners replace siding. The panels are fine. They just do not match anything anymore.

Fade is not even across the house. South and west elevations take dramatically more UV than north and east. Ten years in, the difference between the south wall and the north wall of the same house can be obvious side by side. This is the single most common reason a partial repair fails: a new panel of the exact original SKU reads as a patch against a wall that has moved.

Darker colours fade faster. Deep greys, blues and near-blacks have been popular for a decade and they hold less well than mid-tone neutrals. They also run hotter in summer, which increases thermal movement in the panel.

Installation quality sets the ceiling. Panels are hung, not fastened tight. Nails go in the centre of the slot with about a millimetre of play so the course can move — a 3.6 metre panel travels roughly 12 mm between a January cold snap and an August afternoon. Nailed tight, that panel buckles in the heat and pulls at the nail hem in the cold, and neither is repairable without pulling the wall apart.

Warranties are usually prorated, and the wording matters. A lifetime limited warranty commonly covers the original purchaser with a declining schedule and separate terms for the finish. Some are transferable once, often within a defined window after sale, sometimes at reduced coverage. If resale value is part of your reasoning, read the transfer clause before you choose product.

Older vinyl behaves differently from current vinyl. Panels from the 1980s and early 1990s go brittle with age and crack on removal, which is why a repair on a house of that vintage often turns into an elevation replacement once the crew starts working.

The realistic planning number for a house in this region: expect the wall to still be sound at thirty years and expect the colour to be the thing that makes you replace it, somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five depending on which way the wall faces.
